30 Top Romantic Movies of All Time

We are all suckers for love stories and romantic movies because of we all dream of happy endings and happily ever afters. In real life, though, it is not always so, which is why we are also drawn to movies of estranged lovers or self-sacrificing love to the point of shedding a bucket of tears. For sure, many of us are born romantics because we appreciate real stories about love.

When it comes to the top romantic movies of all time, it is a mixture of the old and new; of light and heavy drama; and of happy endings and tragic ones.

    1. Gone with the wind – 1939 “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” is the iconic lines that made this American classic so popular. It tells a story of a spoiled and rich young woman (Vivien Leigh) who fell in love with a married man (Clark Gable).
    2. Casablanca – 1942 The story took place during the start of World War II in the unoccupied part of Africa. Here the lovers (Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman) had to contend with the complications of war.
    3. Roman holiday- 1953 A sheltered princess (Audrey Hepburn) wanted to taste her freedom met and eventually falls in love with an American reporter (Gregory Peck).
    4. Sabrina – 1954 Audrey Hepburn plays Sabrina who fell in love with the playboy son (William Holden) of her father’s employer. When the feeling seems to be mutual, here comes older and more serious brother (Humphrey Bogart) in the scene and may soon prove to be the better man after all.
    5. An Affair to Remember – 1957 Two people (Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr) fell in love and agreed to meet in the Empire Building after six months, but something happens along the way that could bar their happiness.
    6. When Harry Met Sally – 1989 Friends cannot be lovers or the other way around. That is what good friends Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) believe but falling in love can easily start from friendship.
    7. Pretty Woman – 1990 A ruthless businessman (Richard Gere) employed a beautiful woman-for-hire (Julia Roberts) to be his companion and who eventually changed him in many ways that falling in love seems inevitable.
    8. Ghost – 1990 Even after death, the love of a man (Patrick Swayze) who is now a ghost to his lover (Demi Moore) remains strong.
    9. Sleepless in Seattle – 1993 Putting in an adorable child into the love story is sure to be a heart tugging tale. This is how the movie started with a simple call to a radio station by a son of a newly widowed man (Tom Hanks). The little boy wanted to find the perfect girl (Meg Ryan) to make his father happy.
    10. Immortal Beloved – 1994 Revolves around the love letter written by Ludwig Van Beethoven (Gary Oldman) to an unknown girl, his immortal beloved.
    11. While You Were Sleeping – 1995 A young woman (Sandra Bullock) had a big crush on a dashing businessman (Peter Gallagher) whom she saved from being run over by a train and eventually met the younger brother (Bill Pullman) who seems to be the perfect guy for her.
    12. A Walk in the Clouds – 1995 A married man (Keanu Reeves) rescues a disgraced and pregnant Mexican woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) who came to Las Nubes, which means “clouds”.  Here they will discover what true love means.
    13. The English Patient – 1996 A badly burnt English patient (Ralph Fiennes) recounts his story to his nurse (Juliette Binoche) of his tragic love affair with a married woman (Kristin Scott-Thomas).
    14. Jerry Maguire – 1996 A sports agent (Tom Cruise) fed with the cynicism and the materialistic pursuit of their industry finds himself fired with only one co-worker (Renee Zelwegger) joining him and only one athlete (Cuba Gooding Jr.) staying with him.
    15. One Fine Day – 1996 The children of two divorcees (George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer) missed their field trip and are now stuck with their parents who must now rely on each other in order to juggle both work and babysitting.
    16. Titanic – 1997 Aboard the Titanic, an aristocratic young woman (Kate Winslet) finds herself falling in love with a poor artist (Leonardi DiCaprio), but their love faces many obstacles for it to endure.
    17. You’ve Got Mail – 1998 Two people (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan) met online and fell in love, not knowing that they are business rivals.
    18. A Walk to Remember – 2002 An unlikely pair fated to meet when a troubled young man (Shane West) was forced to do community service and met this special girl (Mandy Moore) who is not your typical teenager, but who may very well change him in many ways.
    19. Love Actually – 2003 The story is about eight very different couples handling their relationships during the very hectic time just before Christmas.
    20. Brokeback Mountain – 2004 It is about the forbidden love between two young cowboys (Heath Ledger and Jake Gylenhaal) and how they handled their distant relationships over the years.
    21. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – 2004 Because their relationship has lost its fizzle, a couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) erased their memories of each other through a medical procedure, but perhaps this is what they needed to rediscover each other.
    22. The Notebook – 2004 Another poor boy (Ryan Gosling) meets rich girl (Rachel MacAdams)and their love story is hindered by their differences in stature.
    23. Chasing Liberty – 2004 Being the first daughter, a young girl (Mandy Moore) just wants to experience being a regular girl and met a handsome photographer (Matthew Goode) to help her taste how it is to be free even for just a little while.
    24. 50 First Dates – 2004 A man (Adam Sandler) who never thought of committing found the perfect girl (Drew Barrymore) who suffers from a short-term memory loss and cannot remember him the next day.
    25. Pride and Prejudice- 2005 From Jane Austen’s classic tale, feisty Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) meets the weathy and proud Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), who needs to overcome the difference in their social standing as he finds himself attracted to the young lady.
    26. One Day – 2011 The story shows just one day in different years of how the relationship of two college chums (Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway) evolved through the years.
    27. The Lake House 2006 Two people (Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock) occupied a lake house in two different times and yet were able to exchange love letters to each other.
    28. Before Sunrise – 1995 It is about a young American (Ethan Hawke) and a  French young woman (Julie Delpy) meeting on a train and eventually spending a romantic night in Vienna. Both know that their love story ends at sunrise for then they will go their separate ways.
    29. Before sunset – 2004 The sequel took place after nine years and the two met again during the book tour of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) in France.
    30. Before Midnight – 2013 It is here we see the couple in a lived-in love story; settling down in Paris and raising their twins.
